I've had to do an experiment where I react an unknown alkali sulfate with calcium chloride to produce a precipitate. Using the mass of that precipitate and stoichiometry, I had to determine the molar mass of the alkali sulfate and hence determine the identity of the alkali.
What would my control variables be?
