What's my control variable in my flame test lab?

Problem(s): - What can be observed when various compounds are heated in a flame? - How can flame tests be used to determine the identity of unknown elements?

So what can my control variable be?|||Most solutions used in flame tests are chlorides. What is to prove that the chloride causes the color? Usually a nitrate of one of the metals is used also to show that the nitrate and the chloride of a particular metal give the same color. |||You need to do a blank run (a run without any metals or compounds that will colour the flame). Usually, this is simply a run of deionised water.

Also, when checking various compounds, make sure you have the basis for the metals you're trying to identify, i.e. know what metal gives what colour. Obtain these by doing runs of pure compounds with known composition.
