What is a control variable in my science experiment?

my experiment is basically having 3 copper cans





they are covered with 3 insulators , silver paper, no insulator and cotton wool


we had to measure the temp. to see which one is best


so which is the independent variable, control variable and dependent variable :)

Silver paper and cotton wool are both independent, as the temps are dependent on the types of covers. So put simply, temp = dependent while coverings = independent.|||Controlled is the can, dependent is the temperature, and the independent is the insulation.
